general elections is all the hype now, and i am getting really disappointed at some of the criticisms and attacks against PAP by some of my friends, yes im pro-PAP and i am so because i want to support a team which had gone all out to mould singapore into what it is today. our achievements were glorious, amazing, incredible, we are only so proud of our country today because of the efforts the govt had put in, the policies they have drafted which showed so much foresight, such that we are envied by the rest of the world and is now a First World nation.
yet, so many singaporeans, especially my peers, are only criticising them and offering nothing but snide remarks. i feel so indignant for our government, imagine doing so much yet receiving no thanks but only snide remarks? and criticism after criticism abt how much they DIDNT do and how badly they fared over this that this that. the people making these criticisms like to target just some particular remark they make during a rally or speech, and they can talk abt it forever. i really wonder when they are making these comments, do they think and reflect on what the govt DID for us? you might not belong to the high income class in our society, but just look around you, look at the safety and security the government has brought to us. look at the things you can do right now. look at all these educated people. we are only so because of the efforts by the govt! they might be earning a lot, i agree, but i agree too that it is acceptable to match their salaries to what they could be earning in the private sector. these people in our govt, they are talented, they are smart, in fact many of them are presidents' scholars. i believe they will do equally well and make the same amt of money if not more, if they stay on in their private sector. hence, does it not make sense to simply match the salaries for them playing a part in singapore's political field to improve the lives of fellow singaporeans? they might not be having it any easier now than if they stay on in their own field of expertise, who says being ministers is all about the fame and money?? we have one of the best, non-corrupted government in the entire world, but they get no appreciation but only opposition parties who want to do nothing but bring them down.
sure, i do not deny we may have talents in our oppositions as well. but quoting MM Lee, this is just a way of showing how well our education policies have become! singapore today is no longer like the olden days and people are having more ideas, they are more outspoken, they speak out more, especially the younger generation which i have observed are no longer politically apathetic. however, what i wish for them is to simply be more appreciative of what people have been doing for us instead of only knowing how to criticise what they have not done. nobody is perfect, and i believe whoever who has learnt economics or have some common knowledge, no policy is 100% foolproof. no policy can solve all our problems. whichever stage of development a country is in, there will be problems. when singapore was a kampung village, there were problems of basic necessities, healthcare, housing etc. now as a First World nation, we have problems of low birthrate, ageing population. these are the problems which come with development, and as much as we can try to counter them, they will still exist and what we can do is to minimize their impacts on our country. like what MM Lee said, singaporeans really want the best of both worlds. we want our houses and apartments, but nobody wants the foreign workers influx. i mean im a singaporean too and i understand that perfectly well, but i too, understand why our country neeeds these people!
here at cck GRC, my mom received her voting slip a few days ago along with a NSP brochure. flipping through it, i find NO REASON to vote them in at all. all i can see is them trying to "win over" the masses, with them suggesting lowering of GST Tax, reduce NS to 15months... i just feel very appalled at these suggestions. do they think they can really do that if they are elected? don't you think the govt has a reason for any decision they make? i believe the policies they formulate do not simply come up from thin air, are not simply from one single individual, but it is only decided after meetings and discussions from many many people who know and understand about singapore. looking at the brochure, they are simply casting aimless objectives, countering the current PAP's building of "two casinos to spur economic growth and set up National Council on Problem Gambling" with "pursue economic growth with due regards to social impact". ?????????? i really got nothing to say to this. does it even address the problem at all? if what you are saying is that our IRs are bring social problems with regards to gambling issues, how does "pursue economic growth with due regards to social impact" even help? isnt the setting up of National Council on Problem Gambling something the govt has come up with to do exactly the same, to pursue growth with regards to social impact? if anyone has really read the very brochure im referring to, you would know this is really nothing but shallow. the least you could do, really, is to at least come up with a solid concrete idea? to try to solve the problem which you have identified?
currently people are all over criticising MM Lee again on his comment that "Aljunied GRC will have 5yrs to repent" if they vote WP in. the first thought that came to my mind when i heard this was the chinese saying, zhong yan ni er. as far as i am concerned, i would rather hear a harsh true fact instead of hypocritical but nice sounding speeches which really only sound like propaganda to me. Like what he said, he is 87, and has been at the helm of our country all these while, do we really want a leader who minces his words and speaks nice sounding words with hypocrisy? I don’t think so. And I don’t think if he is one to do that, we would even have come this far. We owe our success to this very confidence and arrogance, that we will succeed. i am not of legal age to vote, but i really feel very indignant for our govt which is not being appreciated, and with the younger generation only focusing on the areas the govt has failed and neglecting what it has done for us all these years, i am worried and i really wonder what will the future be like for singapore. quoting MM Lee yet again, "what we have now is a foot-loose generation" which did not go through the past difficult times and think that as singapore is a developed country now, it will stay this well and we can always easily change the people taking charge according to our whims and fancies and we will always stay so peaceful and well to do as a nation. perhaps really, the cure to all this talk is a good dose of incompetent government and, we'll see. but if there is one day when singaporeans really come to regret, can we assume everything will just go back to normal? do we assume that these people you voided out still want to be here to serve you?
